The tray sits on old newspaper along the kitchen table. We mix the carrageenan powder into water, let it rest, and squeeze droplets of color straight across the surface. Pull a stylus through the floating rings, lay a sheet down flat, and peel it back to see what came off.
Preparing the base liquid
Mix the powder into warm water and give it time to sit still. Once the liquid thickens, droplets float instead of sinking to the plastic bottom.
Droppers and fine styluses
Squeeze small circles of color, then drag the needles through the surface. The rings pull out into feathers, spirals, and ribbons before your eyes.
Lifting the wet print
Float a sheet of paper flat against the surface for a brief moment. Lift it by two corners, and the paint transfers cleanly off the water.
